About Bjorn

Bjorn Ostergaard worked five years on Garmin’s firmware team in Olathe, Kansas, before he wrote his first consumer review. The transition was driven by what he politely calls “a frustration with how the smart-ring category is covered by people who have never read a sensor datasheet.” Bjorn writes wearables, smart locks, smart-home devices, and robot vacuums for What’s The Best Report, and is the in-house authority on whether a manufacturer’s sensor claim is defensible.

He moved to the United States from Denmark for the Garmin job in 2014 and stayed in Kansas after leaving the company in 2019. His bench is genuinely a bench — a workshop where he tears down and benchmarks every device he reviews against laboratory-grade reference equipment for HRV, GPS accuracy, and lock-cylinder mechanical performance.

Pre-publication work

Firmware engineer, Garmin, 2014–2019. Bjorn worked primarily on Forerunner-series wrist sensors and the Edge-series cycling computers. After leaving Garmin, he spent five years (2020–2025) writing wearables and smart-home reviews for various consumer-tech publications, where he became the freelancer publications hired to settle questions about sensor accuracy and battery claims.

Editorial focus

Bjorn writes the smartwatch, smart ring, smart lock, smart-home, and robot-vacuum verdicts. He is the gating reviewer on any sensor-claim or radio-claim that appears on the site.

Conflicts of interest

Bjorn no longer holds Garmin stock; the equity he received as an employee was sold in 2020. He has no current relationship with Garmin, financial or otherwise. The smartwatch-for-runners winner on this site is Garmin Forerunner 265 because it is the right pick for that question; Theodora reviewed and signed off on that verdict before publication, and the verdict explicitly notes Bjorn’s prior employment.
