How I tested

90 days of structured use, with my actual job (writing this publication’s site, plus side projects in Python and TypeScript). Each tool got a 22-day rotation as the primary AI tool; I held the others available but did not use them as primary during their rotation. The metrics: lines of code where the AI’s contribution was retained (the closest analog to “did the AI actually help”), time per feature shipped, and self-reported subjective trust.

The headline numbers: my retention rate of AI-suggested code on Claude Code rotations was 73%. On Cursor: 64%. On Copilot: 58% (though Copilot’s contributions are mostly autocomplete, which sets a different bar). The shipped-feature time was lowest with Claude Code on the agentic-task subset (refactoring, test addition, multi-file changes) and lowest with Copilot on the typing-heavy subset (inline completion in dense functions).

Why Claude Code wins on integration

The honest cons

  • Terminal-only; if you want an inline chat panel inside your IDE, this is not it.
  • Inline autocomplete is not the focus; if your use is 90% completion, Copilot is the right answer.
  • Cost can be non-trivial on heavy agentic days; the Max-tier plan is meaningful at $100/month for power users.
  • The agent will, occasionally, take an unexpected path on ambiguous requests; you'll need to confirm tool calls until you trust the patterns.
